I found it a little slow and slightly clunky initially - wasn't really sure what was going on. There are lots of characters and it can be tough to keep it all straight. Of course, I kept watching given Wang Yi Bo is great eye candy. I am glad I did as after the slow start, it is picking up. Initially I took a break around episodes 6 and 7 then came back to try again after I found myself unexpectedly thinking about the story. Once I got back in I've been watching it without stopping. This is not a historical drama, it's a martial arts/cultivation story/adventure based on a web novel called Bandits by Priest. Given I love these types of books/ films there is probably a lot I understood that you might not if you are new to the genre. (There is light romance but it isn't the focus of the story, so don't watch it for that). The chemistry between the leads is a slow burn. He has clearly been intrigued since fairly early on. (He even comments in an aside that A'Fei's mother is likely to be more concerned about him taking something more precious away than A'Fei's father, General Zhao, alluding to him wanting to take A'Fei away with him.) She doesn't pick up on the comment and has been fairly oblivious to his charms, more intrigued by the outside world. By episode 12 she seems to be picking up the hints from him now but still not giving anything away herself, not rejecting him either. As the story develops she tells her mother, he is the only man she will ever marry, but still plays it fairly cool with him - she seems to be trying to protect herself emotionally but failing at it! Given the tragic situation their love story is pretty epic - and keeping it cool seems like the only way she can "keep it together". If you are about to watch it then let me save you some confusion so you can get into it a bit quicker than I did... this is just an explanation, not a spoiler. 48 Strongholds (a sanctuary) was set up by Zhao Fei (A'Fei)'s maternal grandfather, Li Zheng (aka The Blade of the South). He had 2 kids, a son and daughter. The son is dead because he saved his niece (female lead, A'Fei) from being kidnapped as a child. The son's son is Li Sheng, A'Fei's cousin, and it is expected he will be the next leader of 48 Strongholds. A'Fei's mother, Li Jinrong, feels guilty her brother died to save her daughter so she tends to go easy on her nephew, Li Sheng, in comparison to how she treats A'Fei. Li Sheng has a sister, who is a fairly prominant side character. Li Sheng's aunt (and Li Zheng's daughter) is Li Jinrong, now leader of the 48 Strongholds. Her daughter is A'Fei, the female lead. A'Fei's father is General Xiao, a military strategist. The story starts when Xie Yun (Wang Yi Bo's character and male lead) infiltrates 48 Strongholds to deliver a message to General Xiao. Cousins, Li Sheng and Zhao Fei, have not left 48 Strongholds and are curious to go out into the world. General Xiao leaves because of Xie Yun's message. Only 3 years later do the cousins get to finally leave 48 Strongholds with the Old Madam, an elderly lady who is a strong martial artist. Things don't go according to plan thanks to plots going on around them, and Li Sheng's immature impulsiveness, but this is also when the adventures begin. Initially there appear to be lots of side stories and characters, but as you watch you begin to see how each of those little stories and characters fit into the bigger story. The author has written each section almost as if it's from Zhao Fei and Li Sheng's perspective initially so like them, we get a limited point of view, but as they grow and their eyes begin to open up, so we also get more perspective and more side stories that help us begin to grasp a bigger and bigger picture. There are hints in a couple of episodes before but you won't find out who the male lead, Xue Yun, really is until the end of episode 12. I was really surprised! One of my favourite characters so far is Wilted Flourishing Palm, Madam Duan, the concubine of Huarong's City Magistrate. She's a tad nuts and great value! Her story pulls pieces of the past together. Loved her. SPOILER ALERT: Update: I just finished the last episode. Wang Yi Bo just gets better and better in this show, and their chemistry grows too. The ending is a happy one but lacks a sense of satisfaction - however, I was so with A'Fei when she finally sank her blade into the super bad guy, and watching Xie Yun (Wang Yi Bo) finally go all out with his moves against the Lu Tian~ bad guy was wonderful. I can imagine the book gives more explanation and so the endings might be more fulfilling than they appear here. I'm left with questions about the wider picture in their world.... The show is a slow burn style show, not ideal for binge watching. Very much enjoyed it.
